Recently, I had the privilege of collaborating with fellow CSFSG member Greg in a significant conservation effort focused on the release of Mary River Cod into designated sections of the Upper Stanley River. This initiative is a vital component of the Mary River Cod recovery programme, which is meticulously managed by the Somerset Wivenhoe Fish Stocking Association (SWFSA). Our involvement was facilitated by Garry Fitzgerald, who expertly coordinated the logistics of the event, enabling us to acquire a healthy quantity of fingerlings. These young fish were then strategically released into several carefully selected locations within the river system, including a particularly promising site located upstream of the Woodford Weir. The recent heavy rainfall in the region posed certain challenges, notably limiting our options for suitable release sites. However, despite these constraints, we were fortunate to identify several pristine habitats that are conducive to the survival and growth of the Mary River Cod. Among these, a new site at Running Creek stood out as an exceptional location, offering the ideal conditions for the fish to thrive in their natural environment. The importance of such collaborations cannot be overstated; when organisations and individuals share the responsibility for stocking and preserving the same river system, it fosters a sense of community and enhances the overall effectiveness of our conservation efforts. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Garry and the SWFSA for their willingness to engage us in this vital release programme. Their dedication to the recovery of the Mary River Cod is commendable and reflects a broader commitment to preserving our native fish species and the ecosystems they inhabit. Looking ahead, we are optimistic about the potential for even greater collaboration in the future. As we continue to work together towards the recovery of the iconic Mary River Cod, we remain hopeful that our combined efforts will yield significant positive outcomes for this remarkable species and the waterways they call home.
